CP 1210 Medium Breakers
The general purpose class for pavement and slab work, running 44 to 55 lb depending on version. Silenced and vibration reduced models are available in 1, 1-1/8, and 1-1/4 inch shanks.
35 lb class, 48 CFM at 90 PSI
CP 1260 Heavy Breakers
Real weight runs 64 to 75 lb. This is the class for thick concrete and continuous roadwork, where a medium breaker rides on top of the slab instead of cutting it.
60 lb class, 63 CFM at 90 PSI
CP 1290 Paving Breakers
The heaviest handheld class at 82 to 96 lb, for reinforced slab, deep pavement, and frozen ground. The CP 1290 SVR adds a vibration reduced handle for full shift use.

Air Supply
What size air compressor does a breaker need?
One 90 lb CP 1290 needs 81 CFM at 90 PSI, so the smallest portable that runs it delivers 95 CFM. Every breaker on this page will run on a single CPS 110 or T110. Undersized air is the most common reason a breaker underperforms on site.

Running more than one tool? Do not just add these numbers up. Load factor, duty cycle, leaks, and pressure drop all change the answer, and simple addition will usually get you the wrong machine. One jobsite factor worth knowing even for a single tool: the US Department of Energy notes that every 2 PSI of unnecessary pressure drop cuts system capacity by roughly 1 percent. On site that usually means hose that is too long or too narrow, so the tool starves even when the compressor is rated correctly.

Compliance
What does OSHA require when breaking concrete?
Breaking concrete with a handheld breaker falls under the OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard for construction, 29 CFR 1926.1153. Table 1 of that standard names jackhammers and handheld powered chipping tools directly and requires a dust control on the tool. That affects what you buy, not just how you work.
Dust control is required, and there are two options
Table 1 allows either a water delivery system supplying a continuous stream or spray of water at the point of impact, or a commercially available shroud with dust collection. Chicago Pneumatic makes a 36 inch retrofit dust suppression spray kit that fits any size CP breaker, rivet buster, or chipping hammer. It runs a 6 GPH atomized mist nozzle covering an 80 degree cone at 40 PSI and connects to a garden hose, so any water source on site will feed it. Ask us to quote it with the tool.
Respirator requirements depend on hours and location
With the dust control in place, Table 1 requires no respirator for outdoor work of four hours or less per shift. Beyond four hours outdoors, or for any work indoors or in an enclosed area, an APF 10 respirator is required. Confirm the current requirement for your site before relying on this.
A retainer is not optional
OSHA requires a safety clip or retainer on pneumatic tools to stop the steel being ejected during operation. Every breaker in the table above ships with a latch or kick latch retainer. Replacement safety clips are part number 9246 0204 83.
Air hose has its own rules
A short wire or positive locking device must tie the hose to the tool. Chicago Pneumatic whip check cables are part number 9246 0204 86 for hose to tool and 9246 0204 85 for hose to hose. Where hose diameter exceeds 1/2 inch, OSHA also requires a safety excess flow valve at the air supply.

When does owning a breaker make sense?
Own the tool once it is on more than one job. A single short job is what a rental yard is for. Past that, the costs that decide it are the ones that never appear on the daily rate.
What the daily rate leaves out
Delivery and pickup on every ticket. Damage waiver or insurance. Fuel and cleaning charges. Late return penalties when a pour slips. The clock keeps running through weekends, rain days, and inspection delays, whether the tool is cutting concrete or sitting on the trailer.
What ownership changes
The breaker is on your truck when the schedule moves up. No return deadline, no reservation, and no branch calling to say the 90 lb class went out this morning. What is the difference between the CP 0112 and CP 0112 S?

What is the difference between an S and an SVR breaker?
An S model is silenced. An SVR model is silenced and adds a vibration reduced handle, so the vibration dampening is on top of the silencing rather than instead of it. SVR models weigh more as a result. A 90 lb class CP 1290 is 82 lb, the CP 1290 S is 83 lb, and the CP 1290 SVR is 96 lb.
